Some people who concealed carry have added a light and/or laser to their handgun. There are decided advantages:
Advantages of Light and/or Laser
There are five major benefits of having a laser on a handgun. These include:
- Training
- Shooting in low light
- Focus on the threat
- Ability to shoot from unconventional positions
- Increased likelihood of making an accurate hit
- Training
In practice, lasers can serve to analyze skill and accuracy. Using a laser in dry fire practice will provide accurate and detailed feedback on the quality of your trigger press. If the gun moves while you are pressing the trigger the laser will visibly move too. If you can press the trigger smoothly the steady laser dot on your target will remain steady.
The laser can also help at live fire practice. If you jerk the trigger while firing, the laser on the target will clearly show it. This shows you that you’ve got practice needed on your trigger press.
Third, the laser also helps with your follow through after your shot. The dot should stay in the same position after the shot.
- Shooting in Low Light
More than 80% of defensive shootings happen in low light. While light beams help, the bright red or green laser beam in twilight or dark is optimum.
By eliminating the need to line up two different things to the front and side of the target, the laser speeds aiming in the dark.
- Focus on the Threat
Having a laser on your handgun assists with the natural tendency to focus on the threat. We have a built-in defense mechanisms. Its aim is to protect from dangers. This is a well-developed instinct in humans. We thus tend to focus on a threat—even tunneling vision and auditory and olfactory clues. Focusing on the laser consciously moves our focus.
You literally sight the threat!
- Ability to Shoot from Unconventional Position
Lasers allow you to shoot from unconventional positions. A conventional shooting position has your gun mounted up high, right in front of your line of sight. However, during defensive gun use, this option is not always available. You may be moving or diving for cover. Your vision may be obscured. With a laser, you can aim and shoot from a low-ready position. You can move and search with gun held low to see where I’m going and seek threats. Lasers are invaluable in these situations.
The laser lets you aim and shoot around barriers. Its beam offers an indicator of a clear line of fire.
- Improve Hit Performance
Lasers have dramatically improved actual hit ratios in defensive shootings. Laser manufacturer Crimson Trace contend that law enforcement agencies using lasers have hit rates of 90% or higher.
Conclusion
Just as handgun technology has improved over the years, so, too, has laser and light technology. Lasers are better, easier to use and cheaper than ever before.
A laser/light/handgun combo is a great way to improve your accuracy and improve your chances of self-defense.
Lasers make great analytics tooIs. They are also very cool and fun to use.
