Grip Your CCW Pistol Correctly

July 7, 2016

Grip has to do with better shot placement. In fast follow up shots, tight shot etc., grip becomes more of a factor. Concealed carriers do not plan on taking down their target with the first round. They always strive to make that first round on the target, but efficacy is not assured.

High or Low Pistol Grip?

Your grip is generally how you control your firearm.  After a shot is fired, the upper receiver slaps backwards. giving us the impression of recoil.  The lower the grip, the more that backward force becomes angular. Fast follow-up shots depend on that force being as close to a straight line as possible.

Signs That Grip Is Too High

  •   The webbing of your dominant hand is getting bit by the upper receiver after a round is fired.
  •   Supporting fingers along the upper receiver are getting bit by the slide

The high grip can definitely hurt. The hard part is that the higher the grip, the more stable the recoil and tighter the follow-up shots.  Low grip has also its risk.

Signs That Grip Is Too Low

  •    You have to get back on target after the initial shot – due to recoil.
  •    Trigger pull naturally cants the muzzle below the bullseye.

Too low and the gun is not in your control. Too high and your hand is getting bit. Dry firing and range time and are vital in finding the right grip for the gun.  Each firearm has different requirements as concealed carry pistols typically range from just enough space for one hand to needing both to direct the firearm.

Supporting The Gun From All Angles – Isometric Tension

To reduce recoil and weapon spread, a uniform pressure must be applied along the gun. This helps to compensate for recoils and ensures that follow-up shots are placed tightly with the previous. Our hands aren’t vice grips. Different handguns require different hand configurations. The one grip that’s unilaterally ineffective is the teacup grip. This is where your dominant hand maintains a firm middle grip of the pistol and your supporting hand rests beneath the magazine well.
